San Francisco was feeling a little left out, so on Monday “Fart” decided to sit down and meet with their first local SF creator, artist, musician: Kevin E. Taylor
Words & Photos: Domonique Kiernan

A little background… Born and raised?
Kevin was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He speaks highly about southern food, the warm weather and the water (unlike the frigid S.F. ocean), and the strong southern history. Kevin studied at Savannah College of Art & Design.
What next?
Post college Kevin wanted to start fueling the art scene in Charleston. He started making small drawings and posting them throughout the city, hosting art shows in houses and playing music with friends Kevin helped develop a small, but now thriving art scene.

Were you once convicted of manslaughter?
“Once I Got my identity mixed up with another guy named Kevin Taylor who had the same birthday as me who was convicted of manslaughter. Funny thing is, unlike me, he was a foot taller and covered in tattoos and it took me a month to get it straightened out.”
So how did Mr. Taylor end up in SF?
Traveling to show artwork at Outer Edge Studio in Monterey, CA he spent the previous week with friends in SF. Shortly after Kevin decided to leave the south and venture West. Heading to SF allowed Kevin to expand his art community and challenge himself as an artist.
What do you like most about living in SF?
“It has just enough of Charleston, in it to keep me from getting homesick. It’s got great food, nature spots on the coast; you can get around on foot, bike or bus. Lots of music/art to see… there’s just so much to do all the time and I’m still discovering new places/people constantly. It took a city this great to excavate me from the south, I think I’ll stay for a while.”
What are you working on now?
“I just finished a mural on 6th Street”.
This week Kevin worked on a mural installation in an area of San Francisco more known for interesting street characters than its artwork. Next time you’re in the neighborhood (6th street and Minna) bring a brown bag and take your time to stop and check out this piece. Kevin’s newest work is all a part of the “Beautification of 6th Street” project in conjunction with The Shooting Gallery.

Can you tell us about the piece?
“The characters in the mural play with the idea of life and death.” The mural is not meant to be disturbing, but rather a more relaxed (nearly sedated) progression thru life’s push and pull.
Check out the making of the mural:

Now that the mural is finished, what are you working on?
“I am taking part in the Red Dot Art Fair in NYC”. It’s a Hotel based contemporary show of artists in NYC. March 27-30th. (http://www.reddotfair.com/NY2008)

Following that Kevin has a show at Swarm Gallery in Oakland on April 18th. Oakland is a fun field trip/ferry ride from S.F. so check it out!
Lets talk Music… How would your describe your music?
Punk Floyd, identity crisis, PSKITZOPRENIC.
Best Band? Melvins!
Worst Band? Creed
I hear you have even more going on after this?:
“Yea, I am working on a show in Berlin at Neurotitan.” The show will combine 25 artists from across the U.S. It’s an exciting project where Kevin will get to show as well as curate in Berlin. Stay tuned for more on that show in the fall. (http://www.neurotitan.de/)

Any last Words?
“Break Rules. Fix Problems.”

What is the story of the voiceless bear and the shit stained angle still in socks? She’s’ not yet dressed and her wings aren’t grown.
Would you like for me to send you a can of boiled peanuts?
