Joshua Simon Krause 

where were did you grow up? 

New York and Florida

where do you live now?

San Diego

how did those places shape you as a person today?

The East Coast probably taught me a certain sensibility that doesn’t really seem to exist on the West Coast. I don’t know if it was the East Coast influence, or my crazy Jewish family, but I have a hustling, survivalist mentality with a critical eye. But California has helped me calm down and just live in the moment a bit more.

walk us through an average day?

I’ve been up around 6am lately, take my puppy on long walks through the trails at Balboa Park, watch Sports Center, listen to The Adam Carolla Show, hit the gym hard, ingest stupid amounts of protein, hunt the internet for good and brutal metal, paint or draw for a bit, build stuff, go off on rants to my patient girlfriend, watch lotsa baseball… 

 

worst job you ever had?

I worked for a publishing company when I lived in New York., that was 1.5 hours outside of the city, and required we stay past 11pm on Friday nights for some god forsaken reason. I had to catch a bus, subway and train. I spent the whole day putting HTML tags on print articles and uploading them to a database. I tried becoming friends with the handful of other people in my department, but they were so lacking in personality, that it was unbearable. My supervisor mentioned he was a huge Paul McCartney fan, and my eyes lit up. “One of my favorite records of all time is RAM-I listened to it on the way to work today” I exclaimed. He looked at me and shrugged, “Never heard of it…but I love his work with Wings.” I lasted about a month, and then I just didn’t show up. It was so Office Space.

 

 

average meal 5 years ago?

Burrito, burrito, burrito, burrito, burrito…but seriously, I got kinda fat…

average meal now?

Oatmeal, protein powder, chicken, tuna, salads, coffee…really stripped down stuff…But I love beer, Vietnamese, pizza, Lebanese/Mediterranean, and Mexican and have found a place for it in a moderate way.

the last thing you painted?

I’m always painting lotsa things.

 

favorite cartoons as a child?

Probably Bugs Bunny. He seemed really clever. I got the sense there was something very “grown-up” about it for some reason, and I was in on the joke.

some of your earliest childhood memories?

I have lotsa memories of my Bubbe and Zayde (Yiddish for Grandma and Grandpa) just very involved and at our house a lot…I have so many Dad stories, from flicking off a waiter at dinner, to yelling at David Copperfield during a magic show, but we’d have to crack a few beers for those…I have memories buzzing about my head all the time. I’m not very nostalgic or sentimental, but my head holds the past.

describe the first 20 years of your life in 5 words?

missed opportunities and self loathing

your day today in 25 words?

Just trying to be and do my thing. If I can make someone smile or laugh, that’s good enough. Oh,  a renewed sense of vigor.

 

average trip to the grocery store?

I just buy lotsa proteiny foods and green leafy stuff…

MLB.com, Digg.com, SurfTheChannel.com, and i just search for stuff I come across in magazines or books or daily life that interests me. Last night I read up on Social Darwinism and other light material…

some of your favorite youtube links?

I just watched a buncha Krav Maga fighting technique stuff. Sometimes I just type in artists or music I like…there is some good stuff from Emperor from back in the early days of the Norwegian black metal scene… 

last time you got into trouble?

Every time I open my yapper and talk straight.

no one and everyone.

I just listened to the new Keep of Kalessin on my i-pod, and then The Beach Boys on the radio…talk about range…

I’m on the level, my man…

describe your creative process?

I just putz around until something on the inside comes outside.

 

you told me earlier that you have a new puppy.  do you want to talk about him/her?

Now, instead of talking to myself all day, I consult her. She is very loving and likes to curl up in your lap and wants her belly rubbed. She’s quite independent and into doing her own thing, too…I think that is what made her the right doggy for me.

something most people dont know about you?I dislike Left-wingers as much as Right-wingers. And I think we as a culture really needa realign our collective moral compass.

whats coming up in the near future for you?

I have no idea…does anyone really?

anything you would like to say before we finish?

If you live and drive in Southern California, stop driving like a dipshit. When you are at a stoplight, it’s not OK to have two car-lengths between you and the car in front of you. Pull-up and be alert. If you are in a turning lane, then turn. Drive quickly, get moving. And this is stolen from Adam Carolla, but blow thru every goddamn left turn arrow. Stop being slowed-down by the man. And overall, lets all start being more observant and considerate of how we are effecting people around us. There seems to be a sense of entitlement, stupidity, laziness, and selfish values that are ripping this country apart.
